Paper Cutting

Paper cutting is traditional art that has evolved throughout the course of Chinese history. Paper cuttings are not made by machine, but by hand. Paper cuttings can be done with scissors or knife. With scissors up to 8 pieces of paper are placed on top of each other and then the pattern is cut. 

With a knife about several pieces of paper are put on a bed of tallow and ashes. Then the artist cuts a pattern into the paper with a knife which is usually held vertically. The colours red and white where very commonly used as the paper.
